A colourful expanse of hills embraces Montemagno, a small medieval village that should be discovered slowly. The ancient castle, also known as the Castle of the Counts Calvi di Bergolo, overlooks the dwellings. In 1290 William VII's troops sacked the fortress, destroying permanently the original structure dating back to 972, although the exterior still preserves the aspect of a 14th-century fortress. Walking through the almond-shaped road network, we come to a square where we find a sumptuous Baroque staircase leading to the entrance of the Church of Santi Martino e Stefano. An agreeable silence surrounds us, as we are embraced by the circular pronaos. Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria della Cava, which belonged to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and is adorned in the apse area with valuable 15th-century frescoes. Not too far from the village, on a hilltop next to the cemetery, we can see the ruins of the Romanesque Church of Santi Vittore e Corona, a fine example of the Monferrato School. You only have to walk along the panoramic trail to find yourself once again in the presence of a breathtaking landscape: a wave seems to be running through the hills tinged with yellow, ochre and green. Everything is in perfect harmony.
